Tube measuring and straightness systems are metrology stations dedicated to the complete geometric inspection of metal and plastic tubes, cylindrical profiles and bars: they measure outer and inner diameter, ovality, wall thickness, straightness along the axis, eccentricity and conicity. They are used on tube production lines serving the widest range of applications, from oil and gas to hydraulics, from shipbuilding to heat exchangers, from civil to industrial piping, wherever geometric conformity is critical to the functionality and safety of the product.

Architectures and technologies
Typical tube measuring systems (tubix and similar) integrate one or more laser heads for measuring outer diameter and ovality (with multi-axis heads), UT (ultrasonic) or LWT (Laser Wall Thickness) sensors for measuring wall thickness, laser sensors for straightness by scanning along the tube axis, and optical systems for measuring the inner diameter (on accessible tubes). The tube is moved through the measuring head by motorized rollers and precision guides, with cycle times of a few seconds per tube. Automatic calibration uses certified master tubes.
Measured parameters
The parameters typically measured and calculated are: mean, minimum and maximum outer diameter (with angular and longitudinal location); ovality along the tube; mean, minimum and maximum wall thickness; straightness along the axis (with calculation of the maximum deviation and of local curvature); eccentricity (the relationship between the outer center and the inner center); conicity and machining effects. The parameters are compared with tolerances defined by industry standards and by the customer specification.
Applications
Tube measuring systems are used on extrusion lines for plastic pipes (PE, PVC, PP for civil and industrial ducting), in the production of metal tubes (carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and special alloys for oil and gas, heat exchangers and aerospace applications), in precision tubes for bearings, in tubes for mechanical engineering, and in medical and nuclear tubing. Verifying straightness and thickness consistency is indispensable in critical applications where failure by fatigue or corrosion has serious consequences.
Integration and traceability
The systems include dedicated software for batch management, storage of the measurement profiles of each individual tube, printing of identification labels carrying the main parameters, and export of conformity certificates compliant with industry standards (for example EN 10204 for metals). Integration with company MES and ERP systems allows complete traceability, from the raw material to the finished product. The stored historical data enable statistical process analysis and the identification of systematic drift.
Product standards
The dimensional tolerances of tubes are governed by numerous product standards: EN 10220 (dimensional tolerances for seamless tubes), EN 10219 (welded tubes in non-alloy steel), ASTM A530 (boiler tubes), EN 12201 (PE pipes for water), ISO 4427 (PE pipes for gas), API 5L (line pipe for oil and gas), API 5CT (casing and tubing). Straightness tolerances follow specific industry standards (EN 10210 for structural applications, EN ISO 1127 for stainless steel tubes). Calibration of the systems uses master tubes certified to ISO 17025.
