Electronic portable tension meters are new-generation digital instruments for measuring the tension of wires, yarns, tapes, belts and cables. Compared with mechanical models they offer higher accuracy, storage of measurements, data output for integration with quality systems, GO/NOGO acceptance thresholds with visual and audible signals, statistical functions and dedicated PC software. They are widespread in production settings where traceability of measurements is required and where connectivity with MES and quality management systems is an integral part of the process. They cover every sector served by mechanical models, with higher performance and more functions.

Electronic architecture
Electronic portable tension meters use high-sensitivity strain-gauge load cells to measure the deflection of the central roller (in three-roller models) or the pulling force (in clamp models). The signal is amplified, digitized and shown on a high-resolution LCD display (typically 4-5 digits). Typical accuracy is ±0.5% of the reading, significantly better than mechanical models. Advanced functions include: peak (automatic recording of the maximum value), averaging over a time interval, batch statistics, programmable GO/NOGO thresholds and dynamic zeroing modes.
Connectivity and software
Modern models incorporate Bluetooth or USB connectivity for transferring measurements to a PC or to mobile devices. The dedicated software allows: complete archiving of measurement campaigns with traceability (operator, product, batch, position); advanced statistical analysis (SPC control charts, Cp/Cpk); automatic report generation; integration with company MES and ERP systems; and export in universal formats (CSV, Excel, PDF). Smartphone apps simplify on-the-spot documentation, with a photograph of the measuring point attached.
Ranges and accessories
Electronic portable tension meters cover measuring ranges from a few cN (for high-end synthetic textile yarns) up to hundreds of N (for medium industrial cables). Interchangeable accessories include: rollers of different diameters for yarns of various cross-sections, clip clamps for rapid measurements on wires and tapes, hooks for static measurements on elastic specimens, and mounts for in-line measurement on moving product. Rechargeable lithium batteries provide full working days of autonomy, recharged via USB.
Applications
The applications span every sector served by mechanical models, with traceability as the added value: the textile industry (with complete batch documentation for quality certification); production of synthetic yarns and fibers (statistical process control); the electrical industry (cables, conductors, strands); the optical fiber industry (checking tension during winding to avoid microfractures); production of wire mesh, fencing and shielding; and the maintenance and set-up of textile machinery (verifying that the compensation systems apply the correct tension).
Standards and calibration
Calibration of electronic portable tension meters is carried out with ISO 17025 certified masses of known value, applied to the wire being measured. The verification covers 3-5 values distributed across the range, calculation of the percentage error, repeatability over repeated measurements, and hysteresis. The typical calibration interval is six-monthly or annual. Automatic zeroing functions make periodic verification in production easier, saving set-up time.
Selection criteria
The choice of electronic tension meter takes into account: the tension range required (cells calibrated close to the working range are preferable, for the best accuracy); the accuracy class the application demands; the data integration and archiving functions; portability for use in production; battery life; the dedicated accessories for the typical yarns or belts involved; and integration with the company MES system for traced batch management.
