Tramex Skipper 5 SMM5 moisture meter for marine surveys

The Skipper 5 (SMM5) from Tramex is the moisture meter for marine surveys: it measures moisture non-destructively in hulls and decks, in both glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and wood, with three selectable scales and two investigation depths.

The Skipper 5 works on the principle of the change in the electrical impedance of the material as its moisture content varies: three coplanar conductive rubber electrodes, pressed against the surface, generate a low-frequency alternating electric field that penetrates the material to about 30 mm (normal depth) or 10 mm (shallow depth), depending on the scale and the density of the material.

The dual depth makes it possible to compare surface moisture with deep moisture and to distinguish true moisture from readings caused by conductive materials. The instrument is ideal for diagnosing osmosis in GRP boats and rot in wooden boats, and for monitoring drying before repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Which materials does the Skipper 5 SMM5 measure?

It measures moisture non-destructively in the glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and the wood of hulls, decks and boat components, both inside and outside.

To what depth does it measure?

The electric field penetrates to about 30 mm at normal depth (Hardwood and GRP scales) and up to 10 mm on the shallow-depth scale, depending on the density of the material.

What is the measuring range on wood?

On wood the instrument indicates a moisture content from 5% to 30% (%MC), with the calibration referred to wood of specific gravity S.G. 0.60.

Does it connect to a smartphone?

Yes. Via Bluetooth it connects to the Tramex Meters App (iOS and Android), which allows readings to be displayed, photographed and geo-tagged as documentary support for the survey.
