Industrial LASER distance sensors

The industrial LASER distance sensors distributed by RODER measure distance, position, level and displacement without contact, from a few centimeters up to 3000 m. The range comprises the ASTech LDM40 (LDM42) series for millimeter accuracy over short and medium distances and LDM300 (LDM301) for long range and speed measurement, with analog, serial and fieldbus interfaces for integration into the installation.
How to choose the LASER distance sensor
The choice of LASER distance sensor depends on the distance to be measured, the accuracy required and the conditions of the application. The two measuring principles cover different needs: phase comparison (LDM42 series) favors millimeter accuracy over short and medium distances; time of flight (LDM301 series) favors long range and speed measurement.
- Distance to be measured: up to ~150 m → LDM42; up to 3000 m → LDM301
- Accuracy required: millimeter (±2 mm) → LDM42; centimeter over long range → LDM301
- Target surface: measurement on natural surfaces or with a reflector
- Speed measurement: required (0–100 m/s) → LDM301
- Interface / network: 4–20 mA, serial, Ethernet, PROFINET, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP, SSI
- Ambient conditions: operating temperature and degree of protection (IP65 / IP67)
- Difficult measuring points: hot, moving or inaccessible objects

The models
Typical applications
LASER distance sensors are used in many industrial applications for measuring distance, position, level, diameter and deformation. The applications implemented and documented are listed below.

Level in tanks and silos
LASER distance sensors measure the level of bulk materials and liquids in large tanks and silos, with accurate readings and remote display, ensuring production continuity and operational safety in the plant.

Position of overhead travelling cranes
LASER distance sensors measure the position and displacement of overhead travelling cranes and cranes, providing precise, safe positioning in lifting and handling operations inside plants and warehouses.

Deformation of large structures
In structural monitoring, LASER distance sensors detect the deformation and displacement of bridges, buildings and large infrastructure, providing accurate, reliable data for safety and scheduled maintenance over time.

Oscillation and vibration of structures
LASER distance sensors measure the oscillation and vibration of large structures without contact: an advanced method for assessing stability over time and ensuring the safety and reliability of the civil and industrial infrastructure being monitored.

Coil diameter and position
In the metallurgical and steel industry, LASER distance sensors check the diameter and position of moving coils non-invasively, providing reliable measurements for process control and handling.

Diameter of paper reels
Measuring reel diameter with LASER distance sensors gives precise, real-time process control, ensuring reliability, less scrap and continuity in the production of webs and films.

Position of high-temperature objects
In steelmaking and foundries, LASER distance sensors measure the position of slabs, billets and red-hot objects without contact, where conventional systems cannot withstand the heat, ensuring accuracy and operator safety.

Length of red-hot materials
In steel process control, LASER distance sensors measure the length and position of bars and red-hot materials without contact, withstanding the high temperatures where conventional measuring methods fail.

Cut length and thickness
On cutting lines, LASER distance sensors measure the length and thickness of the workpiece precisely and repeatably, improving quality control and reducing scrap in industrial cut-to-length processes.

Position of transport vehicles
In logistics and transport, LASER distance sensors monitor the position and movement of vehicles, improving operational efficiency and safety through reliable, real-time distance measurements.
Non-contact distance measurement with LASER technology
Non-contact distance measurement with LASER distance sensors is now a standard in process control and industrial automation: it makes it possible to detect position, level, diameter, thickness and deformation even at long range, on moving or high-temperature surfaces, where conventional mechanical systems cannot be used. The choice between the LDM40 (LDM42) series and the LDM300 (LDM301) series depends on the measuring range and the accuracy required.
Both series are designed for continuous industrial use, with protective housings for harsh environments and wide integration options through 4–20 mA analog output, serial interface and fieldbus. RODER supports the choice of model, the configuration of accessories and integration into the installation: see the LDM42 and LDM301 datasheets for full specifications, downloadable technical documentation and part numbers.
