Corrosion and wall integrity
Corrosion and wall integrity of tanks, pipes, hulls and metal structures are checked by measuring the residual metal thickness, the continuity of protective coatings and the tightness of bolted joints. This section brings together the instruments for these checks, in the plant and on site.

What the measurement is for: corrosion and wall integrity ↑ top
Measurement techniques ↑ top
Ultrasonic corrosion thickness gauges with dual-element probes measure residual thickness from one side only, even through the coating (echo-echo mode) and on corroded or hot surfaces; wet-sponge and high-voltage porosity detectors (holiday detectors) locate pores and discontinuities in insulating coatings; ultrasonic bolt tension monitors measure the elastic elongation of the bolt, which is more reliable than torque control.
Selection criteria ↑ top
- Material and thickness to be measured, presence of coating and surface condition.
- Part temperature: high-temperature probes and couplants.
- Insulating coating thickness, to select the holiday detector voltage.
- Bolt diameter, length and material for the tension monitor.
- Recording of measurement points and trends for inspection plans.
