Stroboscopes make it possible to measure rotational speed (revolutions per minute) without contact and to carry out preventive maintenance of moving parts. By illuminating an object in rotary or oscillating motion with very short flashes, when the flash rate matches the speed of the motion the object appears stationary and its speed can be read directly on the instrument. The same technique allows belts, pulleys and gears to be observed in “freeze frame” to detect wear, play and anomalies before they turn into failures. Measurement takes place directly on the production line, with no machine downtime or slowing of the process.

How rotational speed is measured with a stroboscope
The flash rate (in FPM or Hz) is adjusted until the image of the moving object appears perfectly still: at that moment the flash rate matches the speed of rotation or oscillating motion, which is read on the instrument display. The typical flash range is 60–12,000 FPM, with resolution down to 0.1 FPM, for precise, repeatable measurements without contact with the object.
Preventive and predictive maintenance
By observing moving parts in freeze frame, it is possible to detect early wear, misalignment, play and abnormal vibrations in belts, pulleys, gears, cams and bearings. Stroboscopic analysis thus becomes a tool for preventive and predictive maintenance, allowing interventions to be scheduled before failure and reducing unplanned machine downtime.
In-line print quality control
In the printing industry, the stroboscope makes it possible to check print quality and colour registration directly in line, on the web moving at high speed, without machine downtime. The operator can check text, screens and details as if the material were stationary.
Portable and fixed models
- Battery-powered portable: light and easy to handle for field inspections and maintenance.
- Fixed mains-powered (e.g. universal 85–240 VAC): for permanent installation on production lines.
- Xenon or LED: Xenon for very intense flashes, LED for long life and less maintenance.
- Easy-to-read display and controls for synchronising the number of flashes per second with the process.
Advantages of non-contact measurement
- No contact with the object: it does not alter its motion and requires no machine downtime.
- Fast, repeatable measurement of rotational speed.
- Early detection of anomalies for preventive maintenance.
- Can also be used on parts that are difficult to access.
Frequently asked questions
The flash rate is adjusted until the object appears stationary: that value corresponds to the speed of rotation or oscillation, read on the instrument in FPM or Hz.
It allows belts, pulleys and gears to be observed in freeze frame and wear, play and abnormal vibrations to be detected before they turn into failures.
Yes: there are battery-powered portable models and fixed mains-powered models (for example with a universal 85–240 VAC range).
No: it is a non-contact measurement and requires neither machine downtime nor slowing of the process.
