The instruments used for force measurement are known as dynamometers or load cells and are generally electronic devices for quantifying tensile or compressive force.
There are many types of force measuring instrument, with an almost endless range of uses. Safety or engineering tests, destructive tests or fatigue tests: many industries can benefit from knowing information such as the breaking point of an object, the elasticity of a material, or simply the force needed to open or close a given object.
A force gauge makes it possible to measure forces such as compression, tension, elasticity or even friction forces.
These force gauges are typically used to carry out push/pull tests in quality control and during assembly.
Devices are available for industrial applications such as measuring the closing force of pistons, measuring the pull-off forces of cable connections, or even for ergonomics measurement devices such as those used by physiotherapists and doctors to determine workplace loads.
The digital versions generally allow data storage, data export (USB, RS232, Mitutoyo Digimatic or analog output) and further processing on a computer.
State-of-the-art test stands are available for all models, ensuring maximum precision and repeatability in test series.

Some applications of force measurement products
Technical insight
Force measurements are an essential operation in many industrial activities, from engineering to materials science, from quality control to mass production. Several instruments are available for measuring force: bench torque meters, cap torque meters, portable torque meters, torque wrenches, dynamometers and portable force gauges.
Force measurement with bench torque meters
Torque meters are instruments that measure the force applied to an object, generally with a combination of force and torsion. Bench torque meters are generally used to measure rotational force in the laboratory. The test consists of applying a torsional force to an object (a screw, for example) mounted on the torque meter and reading its instantaneous or peak value on the instrument’s digital indicator. Once the torque meter has reached the maximum force, this can be read on the display and used to calculate the value of the torsional force as a function of the operating cycle.
Force measurement with cap torque meters
A common type of torque meter is the cap torque meter. These instruments measure the torsional force needed to remove or tighten the caps of bottles and jars. Cap torque meters are used in various industries, such as food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics. The torsional force is usually applied to the cap by the operator’s hand or by using a dedicated three- or four-jaw clamp, depending on the type of cap. The torque applied is measured on a digital display and can be transmitted to a data acquisition system.
Force measurement with portable torque meters
Portable torque meters are light and versatile instruments for measuring torsional force. These instruments can be used to measure the tightening torque on door locks, seals and bolts. Most portable torque meters have a digital display showing the torsional force applied in real time. They can measure a wide range of torsional forces and are designed to be easy to use.
Force measurement with torque wrenches
Torque wrenches are instruments used for measuring tightening force. These instruments can be set to apply a specific tightening force when installing bolts or nuts. By using the torque wrench, operators can avoid applying excessive or insufficient tightening force, thus reducing the risk of damage to the material. Torque wrenches are commonly used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas.
Force measurement with dynamometers
Dynamometers are instruments used for measuring force, both in line and off line. They can be used to measure the compressive or tensile force of objects. Dynamometers are often used in the mechanical sector to measure the tensile force of lifting ropes and cables or to assess the linear movements of pistons and cylinders. The digital display shows the force expressed in N, kg, pounds or ounces in real time.
Force measurement with portable force gauges
Portable force gauges are instruments suited to field testing or to conditions outside the production or assembly line. Portable gauges are generally battery-powered and allow data to be stored in the internal memory and then transferred to an external computer.
