Moisture measurements are of fundamental importance in industry. The humidity present in the working environment can have a significant impact on product quality, worker safety and the efficiency of production processes.
Moisture measurement can be carried out with sensors and measuring instruments specifically designed to measure humidity and/or temperature for dew point determination.
A moisture meter (also called a thermo-hygrometer or hygrometer) measures air humidity or the equilibrium moisture content of the material safely, quickly and precisely.
Typical applications of moisture measurement in industry include the production of pharmaceutical, food, textile and paper products, as well as the management of environmental conditions in HVAC systems. Moisture measurements are also used for the prevention of corrosion in piping systems and in the conservation of historical and artistic artifacts in museums and archives.
The advantages of using measuring instruments for moisture measurement are many. Thanks to precise measurements, product quality can be checked and ensured and damage caused by excessive moisture can be prevented.
Moisture measurements can also help to maintain a healthy and safe working environment for workers, helping to prevent respiratory illnesses and skin irritation. Moreover, moisture measurement data can help to improve the efficiency of production processes, for example in the production of materials such as paper, where moisture can affect the production speed.

Technical insight
Moisture is a fundamental parameter to be measured in many environments: from the laboratory to industry, from production processes to storage warehouses. A correct assessment of moisture can prevent damage to structures and objects, prevent the proliferation of mold and bacteria, and safeguard people’s health.
When speaking of moisture measurement, two main types of instrument can be distinguished: portable instruments and bench instruments.
Moisture measurements with portable instruments are very useful when the measurement has to be taken in a specific area or at different times in different positions. Examples of instruments of this type are thermo-hygrometers, hygrothermographs, analog-reading humidity sensors and digital meters. These devices are fitted with highly sensitive sensors, able to detect moisture with great precision.
Moisture measurements with bench instruments, on the other hand, are recommended when the measurement has to be taken continuously, with high connectivity; they are used in laboratories and production environments. Bench instruments measure moisture using a humidity sensor and are very precise in providing reliable data over time. They can be used to monitor an entire area, such as a laboratory or a room.
