Types<\/h2>
Temperature data loggers fall into the following types: stand-alone models (self-contained, with an internal battery, local recording and periodic data download via USB or Bluetooth, typical range -40 to +70 \u00b0C); wireless models (with real-time transmission of readings via Wi-Fi, ZigBee, LoRa or NB-IoT to a central system, ideal for distributed remote monitoring); models with an integrated display (showing min\/max\/current on the device itself); models with an external probe (for high-accuracy measurement with Pt100 or a thermocouple, and extended ranges); and “smart” models with combined sensors (T+RH, T+pressure, T+CO2) for multi-parameter monitoring. Models for pharmaceutical applications often carry 21 CFR Part 11 (FDA) certification for electronic signature and traceability. <\/p>
HACCP applications<\/h2>
In the food industry, data loggers are used for HACCP control of the cold chain: refrigerated transport (trucks, sea containers); cold storage rooms; retail chilled display cabinets; cooking and cooling of cooked products; and pasteurization, sterilization and controlled thawing processes. EU Regulation 852\/2004 and the standard UNI EN 13485 govern the requirements for thermometers and data loggers for HACCP use, with specifications for accuracy (typically \u00b10.5 \u00b0C), range, certification and traceable recording. The data are used to generate compliance reports in the event of health inspections. <\/p>
Pharmaceutical applications<\/h2>
In the pharmaceutical field, data loggers are critical for: validation of GMP processes to EU Annex 1 and USP <1079> for the storage and transport of sensitive medicines; continuous monitoring of pharmaceutical warehouses with automatic alarms for deviations; transport of refrigerated medicines (vaccines, biologicals, plasma); and validation of freeze-drying, sterilization and controlled thawing processes for biological products. Compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 (FDA) is essential for clinical trials and for export to the USA. ISO 17025 calibration with traceability is mandatory for regulated applications. <\/p>
Other applications<\/h2>
The applications extend to: monitoring archives, libraries and museums (preservation of cultural heritage, in Italy to UNI 10829); laboratory environments (climatic chambers, incubators, refrigerators); monitoring of industrial processes (painting, powder coating, curing); scientific research; agriculture (greenhouses, farm stores, silos); international shipments (with alarms for threshold breaches); building management (checking the air conditioning of spaces); and environmental applications (quality of the working environment).<\/p>
Typical characteristics<\/h2>
The characteristics of data loggers are: typical temperature range -40 \u00b0C to +70 \u00b0C (standard models), -90 \u00b0C to +140 \u00b0C (external probes), up to 2000 \u00b0C with thermocouples; resolution 0.1 \u00b0C; typical accuracy \u00b10.5 \u00b0C; internal memory from 10,000 to 50,000+ points; programmable sampling intervals from 1 second to 24 hours; battery life of 1-10 years (lithium CR2032 to CR123); IP67-IP68 protection rating for outdoor applications; transport certification (IATA) for air freight; and dedicated software for downloading, analysis and report generation.<\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
The choice of data logger involves considering: the temperature range and accuracy needed; the battery life required (intercontinental shipments call for long-life batteries); compliance with the applicable standards (HACCP, GMP, 21 CFR Part 11); the download interfaces (USB, Bluetooth, wireless); the analysis and reporting software supplied; the unit cost (for shipping applications the cost-per-shipment ratio is assessed, possibly with economical “single-use” models); and the availability of an ISO 17025 calibration certificate.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
