The detection principle<\/h2>
The most widespread arrangement uses a linear light source (laser or LED) that illuminates the moving web; a photoelectric sensor or a line-scan camera positioned on the opposite side collects the transmitted light. When a hole passes through the field of the sensor, the increase in transmitted light generates an electrical peak which, processed in real time, signals the discontinuity. For very small holes (tenths of a millimeter), arrangements with high-speed cameras and collimated lighting are used. The detection rate can reach hundreds of kHz, enough for webs moving at tens of m\/s. <\/p>
Technical characteristics<\/h2>
Industrial hole detectors cover minimum detectable hole sizes from 0.1 to 5 mm depending on the model, web widths up to over 3000 mm, web speeds up to 30-50 m\/s, response times of < 100 \u03bcs and digital outputs to trigger markers, ejectors or line stops. Advanced models include defect counting and mapping functions (coordinates along the web), classification by size and reporting outputs. The arrangement requires a clear line of sight between source and sensor, with mechanical measures to stabilize the web. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
Hole detectors are used in the paper industry for the quality control of paper and board reels, in the textile industry to inspect nonwovens and carpets, in the production of plastic films and thin sheets, in the processing of thin metal foils (aluminum, copper, steel), in the production of strip gaskets, in the manufacture of filters and membranes, and in the processing of hide and leather. Integration with marking systems allows the defective area to be identified precisely, for rejection or subsequent reworking. <\/p>
Safety and standards<\/h2>
Detectors with a laser source follow the IEC 60825-1 classification. Performance specifications (minimum detectable size, false positives, false negatives) are declared by the manufacturer and validated with reference samples. For critical applications it is advisable to verify performance on the specific product, taking into account transparency, opacity and the presence of printing or surface patterns that can cause false detections. Periodic calibration is carried out with certified hole masks. <\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
The choice depends on the minimum hole size to be detected, on the web speed, on the width of the material, on the optical characteristics of the product (transparency, reflectivity, color), on integration with the line PLC, on the need to track the position of defects and on the IP protection rating for the industrial environment. Preliminary verification on real samples is strongly recommended. <\/p>
Integrating the hole detector with production quality management systems allows quality maps of the reel to be generated automatically, indicating for each meter whether anomalies are present and enabling differentiated winding strategies (targeted cuts to remove defective areas, classification by quality).
