Operating principle<\/h2>
The radius gauge is based on the geometric chord-and-rise relationship: when the instrument is placed on the curved surface, two reference points (of known spacing) define a chord, while a central contact point measures the rise, or sagitta, of the arc segment. From the relationship R = (C\u00b2\/8h) + h\/2, where C is the chord and h the rise, the radius of curvature is obtained. On digital models, the calculation is performed automatically by the electronics of the instrument; on analog models, the rise read on the dial indicator must be converted mathematically or by means of tables. <\/p>
Technical characteristics<\/h2>
The typical measuring ranges of radius gauges cover radii from 10 mm up to over 5000 mm, depending on the chord of the instrument and the resolution of the contact point. The typical resolution of the integrated dial indicator is 0.01 mm, sufficient for measurements of medium and large radii. The structure is usually of hardened and ground steel, with parallel bearing surfaces and a central contact point on a precision guide. Digital models integrate calculation, memory, statistical and data output functions. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
Radius gauges are used in the inspection of bent tubes for hydraulic and oil-hydraulic applications, of bent profiles for metal structural work, of pressed sheet metal, of aerospace components with aerodynamic curvatures, of rubber and plastic profiles for seals, and of cylindrical silos and tanks to verify the effective diameter. They are used in the maintenance of pipework in shipyards and in the inspection of railway components (rails, wheel profiles). <\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
There is no specific ISO standard for the radius gauge, but the curvature tolerances of finished products are governed by product standards (for example EN 10220 for metal tubes, EN 12952 for boiler pipework, and MIL-STD specifications for aerospace). Calibration of radius gauges is performed with templates and radius standards certified to ISO 17025, with traceability to primary national standards. <\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
Selecting the right radius gauge means considering the range of radii to be measured, the chord of the instrument (long chords for large radii, short ones for small radii), the resolution of the dial indicator or digital display, the geometry of the central contact point (ball for standard applications, knife-edge for internal surfaces) and the presence of data output for integration with quality control systems. For the aerospace sector and for checks on critical components, the use of certified radius gauges with a calibration report is preferable. <\/p>
As an alternative or a complement to the radius gauge, measurements of the radius of curvature can be carried out with 2D or 3D laser profilometers, which digitally reconstruct the entire profile of the workpiece and calculate its radius automatically with dedicated software processing.<\/p>
The spread of digital radius gauges with wireless connectivity has simplified the archiving of measurements: the data is transferred directly to the quality management system without the need for manual transcription, eliminating errors and reducing reporting times.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
