Measuring methods<\/h2>
The two main methods are: static measurement by deflection (force-deflection method) \u2014 a defined force is applied perpendicular to the belt span and the deflection is measured; the value corresponds to the tension according to curves specific to the belt manufacturer; and dynamic measurement by vibration frequency (sonic tension method) \u2014 the belt is excited with a light tap and the resulting vibration frequency is measured with an optical or acoustic sensor; the frequency is related to the tension through the formula T = 4\u00b7m\u00b7L\u00b2\u00b7f\u00b2 (where m is the linear mass, L the free span and f the frequency). The sonic method is faster and less affected by the operator’s technique. <\/p>
Instruments for the sonic method<\/h2>
Portable sonic tension meters combine an optical sensor (laser beam or photodetector) or an acoustic one (microphone) to measure the frequency, a digital display for the reading, and a function that calculates the tension once the belt parameters are known (mass per unit length, free span between the pulleys). The operator enters the belt parameters, taps the belt lightly with a finger, and the instrument automatically measures the vibration frequency and calculates the tension in N or lbf. The more advanced models have built-in databases of commercial belts, to simplify entering the parameters. <\/p>
Instruments for the static method<\/h2>
Instruments for deflection measurement are simpler: a rod with a graduated force scale is pressed against the belt; when the deflection reaches the value recommended by the belt manufacturer (in mm), the applied force is read in N. Comparing that force with the tension-deflection diagram supplied by the belt manufacturer (specific to type, width and free span) gives the tension. This method is inexpensive but slower and less precise than the sonic method, and it depends on the operator’s technique. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
Typical use is in the preventive maintenance of industrial machinery with belt drives: fans, pumps, compressors, geared motors, machine tools and belt conveyor systems. Also in the automotive sector (timing belts, the poly-V accessory belt, power-steering belts). Checking the tension is particularly important after new belts are fitted (they stretch during initial running-in) and periodically, to detect the slackening caused by wear. Meeting the belt manufacturer’s specifications maximizes the service life of the drive. <\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
Belt tension specifications are given by the belt manufacturers themselves (Gates, Fenner, Optibelt, Continental and others) in the technical data sheets of the individual products, with curves as a function of type, width and free span. The measuring procedures are described in ISO 22152 (timing belts) and DIN 7753. Calibration of sonic tension meters is carried out with sample belts at a known tension (verified with load cells) or with calibrated frequency generators. <\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
The choice depends on the typical tension range of the belts to be checked, on the type of belt (V, timing, flat), on the working speed required (for checks across many machines the sonic method is preferable), on the availability of a built-in database of commercial belts, on portability for intensive maintenance use, and on the data interfaces for recording the checks performed.
