Three-roller measuring principle<\/h2>
The most widespread principle is the three-roller system: the wire or tape under tension passes between two fixed lateral rollers and a movable central one, which is restrained by a calibrated spring. Tension in the wire tends to pull the central roller in the direction opposite to that of its initial deflection; the roller’s equilibrium position, read on a dial with a pointer, corresponds directly to the tension in the wire. The system is geometrically robust: the reading is independent of the speed of the wire (within operating limits) and of the material, depending only on the geometry of the rollers and on the calibration of the spring. <\/p>
Types<\/h2>
Mechanical tension meters differ in: measuring range (from a few cN for very fine textile yarns to hundreds of N for industrial cables); roller geometry (in polished metal to reduce friction, with interchangeable guides for different wire diameters); accuracy class (typically \u00b12-5% of full scale); reading mode (mechanical dial, optionally with a maximum-value pointer); and accessories (ergonomic grips, hooks for static measurement). Specific variants exist for measurements on wide tapes, belts and single fibers. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
The main applications are in the textile industry: checking yarn tension during warping, weaving, knitting and embroidery; verifying tension on winding, texturing and twisting machines; checking the winding of cops and bobbins; measuring the tension of elastic tapes, technical fibers and optical fibers. In wire drawing they are used for qualitative checking of the tension of the metal wire being processed. In the production of electrical and optical cables they check the tension applied during stranding and sheathing. <\/p>
Advantages and limitations<\/h2>
The main advantages are: independence from an electrical supply (use in places without a socket); mechanical robustness (durability in dusty and damp environments); ease of use (minimal operator training); low initial and maintenance cost; and no need for electronic calibration. The limitations are: no data-logging or data-output functions; a lower accuracy class than electronic models; subjective reading (visual reading of the dial); and the difficulty of producing statistics on batches of measurements. <\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
There is no single international standard for mechanical portable tension meters. Manufacturers declare their metrological characteristics according to internal procedures, generally based on standards ISO 7768 (yarn tension testers) and DIN 53843. Periodic calibration is carried out with calibrated masses hung at the end of the wire, so as to generate a known tension for comparison with the tension meter’s reading. Typical calibration intervals are six-monthly or annual, depending on how intensively the instrument is used. <\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
The choice of mechanical tension meter takes into account the tension range required, the typical diameter of the wire or tape being measured, the geometry of the product (round wire, flat tape, elastic fiber), the operating conditions (presence of lubricants, textile dust, vibration), portability for intensive use, and value for money. For more accurate measurements with data logging, electronic models are preferable; for rapid qualitative checks and for harsh environments, mechanical models remain a valid and reliable choice. <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
