Moisture meters for GRP hulls<\/h2>
Moisture meters for GRP hulls are pinless capacitive instruments which, placed against the outer surface of the hull, generate an electric field that penetrates the first 10-30 mm of the laminate. The presence of water in GRP laminates is detected as a change in the dielectric constant. GRP moisture values are expressed on a relative scale (0-100 or 0-1000) rather than as a water percentage: interpreting them calls for the surveyor’s experience. Typical values are: dry hull 0-20 units; significant moisture present 20-60 units; seriously wet hull > 60 units. Manufacturers provide guidelines for interpreting the readings. <\/p>
Osmosis<\/h2>
Osmosis is a structural problem typical of GRP hulls built without proper barriers: seawater slowly penetrates the outer gelcoat and reaches the inner laminate layers, where it reacts with incomplete polymerization to create water blisters under pressure. The blisters are invisible from outside at first; early diagnosis with moisture meters allows work to be done before visible damage appears. Screening with capacitive meters is fundamental to the pre-purchase evaluation of used boats and to planning a refit (stripping the gelcoat and reapplying epoxy barriers). <\/p>
Moisture meters for wooden hulls<\/h2>
For wooden hulls (rare among modern boats but common in vintage and classic craft), moisture meters specific to wood are used (see the wood moisture category), with spot pin measurements. Moisture in the wood of a hull must stay below 18-20% to prevent rot; higher values indicate water ingress, the washing away of protective coatings or local leaks. Inspections are periodic (generally annual) and fundamental to preserving the commercial value of the boat. <\/p>
Inspection procedure<\/h2>
The typical inspection procedure for a GRP hull involves: an external visual inspection to reveal visible osmosis, gelcoat detachment and previous repairs; systematic mapping of moisture meter readings across the whole hull (on a grid of measurement points); recording the values on an inspection sheet (with photographs and locations); identification of areas with anomalous readings; and, where appropriate, the extraction of cores for laboratory analysis of the gelcoat and laminate. The resulting survey includes an overall assessment of the condition of the boat and recommendations for work (whether a refit is needed, how urgent it is, estimated costs). <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
The applications include: marine surveyors for pre-purchase and pre-sale valuations of used boats; boatyards for quality control during construction, refit and winter storage; marine insurers for claim surveys or when accepting new policies; boat brokers and dealers; private owners for periodic checks on their own hull; and inspectors for marine safety certifications. Inspection frequency is typically annual for valuable or older boats, and every two years for more recent boats in a moderate environment. <\/p>
Practical considerations<\/h2>
To obtain reliable readings it is important to: measure the hull dry on the surface (after a few hours ashore for proper stabilization, the hull loses its surface moisture but retains the moisture inside); repeat measurements in several areas to identify gradients and anomalies; take temperature into account (the meter is affected by temperature – some models have automatic compensation); and validate with control measurements on known areas (for example the transom, generally less exposed to water).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
