Portable field meters<\/h2>
Portable cereal moisture meters use a capacitance cell sensor: a cell of standardized volume is filled with the grain, and the instrument measures the dielectric constant of the grain-and-air mixture, from which it calculates moisture by mass using calibration curves specific to each variety. The typical range is 5-40% moisture. Typical accuracy is \u00b10.5-1% for professional models. The response is fast (10-30 seconds per measurement). The more advanced models offer: a variety database with dedicated curves (hybrid maize, durum wheat, common wheat, soya, sunflower, rice and so on); automatic compensation for product temperature; and built-in scales for measuring test weight at the same time. <\/p>
Benchtop models<\/h2>
Grain collection centers, mills and feed plants use high-precision benchtop meters that combine: a large-capacity measuring cell (to reduce the effect of an uneven sample); a precision balance for determining test weight at the same time as moisture (important for trading); several dedicated calibration curves; software for archiving sampling campaigns; and data output for integration with grain collection management systems. They are metrologically certified to OIML R59 for the scales and for sector moisture meters. <\/p>
Thermogravimetric balances<\/h2>
The reference method for measuring cereal moisture accurately is the ISO 712 gravimetric method: a sample (10-20 g) is finely ground, weighed and dried in a ventilated oven at 130 \u00b0C for 1-2 hours (with variants specific to each cereal); the difference in weight gives the moisture by mass with excellent accuracy. It is the reference for calibrating capacitive meters and for formal laboratory analysis. Modern thermogravimetric balances combine weighing and drying in a single instrument, reducing both time and error. <\/p>
Commercial applications<\/h2>
Cereal moisture meters are used in: farms (checking moisture before harvest – to plan drying and any storage); grain collection centers and agricultural cooperatives (checking the product on arrival to set the price and plan drying); mills, feed plants and processing industries (acceptance testing of raw materials); drying plants (monitoring the drying process to confirm the target moisture has been reached); storage warehouses (monitoring moisture over time to prevent deterioration); and quality inspectors for formal checks.<\/p>
Storage moisture<\/h2>
The moisture values for safe cereal storage are: wheat 12-14%; maize 13-14%; soya 12-13%; rice 13-14%; barley 13-14%; sunflower 8-9%. Above these values, biological activity (molds, yeasts, insects, fermentation) compromises the quality of the product and can create hazardous conditions (poisoning by mycotoxins such as aflatoxins, fumonisins and ochratoxins). Monitoring moisture during storage is therefore an essential practice for both food safety and the economic management of stocks. <\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
The main standards are: ISO 712 (gravimetric method for cereals, the international reference); ISO 6540 (specific to maize); ISO 11048 (wheat – grinding method); ASAE S352 (USA, grain); UNI 9276 (Italy, cereals and pulses). For legal trading, OIML R59 (cereal moisture meters).
