Pin moisture meters<\/h2>
Resistive moisture meters use two pins which, driven into the wood, measure the electrical resistance between them. The electrical resistance of wood is inversely proportional to its water content, following calibration curves specific to each species. The instrument automatically converts the resistance into a moisture percentage (% by mass), taking account of the type of wood selected by the user (a built-in database of 50-100 common species). Pin penetration (typically 5-10 mm, up to 50 mm with accessories) allows moisture to be measured at different depths, which matters for checking gradients. <\/p>
Pinless moisture meters<\/h2>
Pinless (capacitive) meters use a plate sensor placed on the surface of the wood: the electric field generated penetrates the first 20-40 mm of the wood and measures the dielectric constant, which varies with the moisture contained. They are non-destructive (they leave no mark on the wood) and particularly valued for inspecting furniture, finished floors and parquet already laid. Their resolution is lower than pin instruments for localized depth measurements, but they offer scanning speed and versatility. Dual-technology models exist that combine pins (for deep spot measurements) and capacitive sensing (for quick surface scanning). <\/p>
Range and reference values<\/h2>
The typical measurable moisture range runs from 5% to 30-50% for most instruments. The reference values for working with wood are: kiln-dried timber 8-12% for interior applications; timber for exterior construction 14-18%; freshly cut green timber 25-50%. For parquet, the moisture content must be in equilibrium with that of the installation environment (typically 8-10% at 50% RH and 20 \u00b0C). Checking before laying is mandatory to ensure the floor remains stable over time. Typical accuracies are \u00b11-2% on wood moisture. <\/p>
Temperature and species compensation<\/h2>
The measurement of wood moisture is affected by the temperature of the wood itself and by the species. Professional moisture meters incorporate: a contact thermometer to measure the temperature of the wood (manual or automatic); automatic temperature compensation in the moisture reading; a database of the most common species (oak, fir, pine, beech, ash, birch, mahogany, teak, iroko, larch, spruce, eucalyptus and so on) with dedicated calibration curves; and the option of entering custom species with personalized curves for special applications. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
The main applications are: quality control of timber at the sawmill (moisture at the point of sale); acceptance of parquet and board deliveries; pre-laying checks on parquet (measuring both the floor and the concrete or screed substrate); inspection of furniture and fittings (to check for moisture damage); building inspections (structural timber in roofs, beams and brackets – to identify rot problems); the carpentry industry (checking timber for production); craft joinery; and the maintenance of floors, parquet and outdoor decking. Building inspectors use them for water damage assessments and for fitness certifications. <\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
The main standards are: UNI EN 13183-1 (measurement by oven drying – the reference gravimetric method); UNI EN 13183-2 (electrical resistance measurement); UNI EN 13183-3 (capacitive method); ISO 13061 (physical properties of wood); BS 942 (UK), DIN 52183 (Germany).
