Measurement geometries 20\/60\/85\u00b0<\/h2>
The ISO 2813 standard defines three main measurement geometries: 60\u00b0 (universal, applicable to all glossy surfaces between 10 and 70 GU); 20\u00b0 (for very glossy surfaces, above 70 GU, where the low angle increases resolution at high gloss levels); 85\u00b0 (for matte surfaces, below 10 GU, where the high angle increases resolution at low gloss levels). Triple-incidence gloss meters measure the three angles simultaneously to fully characterize the surface and to automatically establish the most appropriate geometry. GU values range from 0 (completely matte, powdered) to over 100 (mirror surfaces). <\/p>
Operating principle<\/h2>
The instrument consists of: a stabilized light source (tungsten-halogen lamp or white LED); projection optics that focus the beam onto the surface at the defined angle (20\u00b0, 60\u00b0 or 85\u00b0); collection optics that capture only the light reflected at the opposite specular angle; a photodetector (silicon photodiode) to measure the intensity of the collected light. The ratio between the measured intensity and the reference intensity (on a black glass standard sample) gives the GU value. Calibration is performed with a certified gloss standard supplied with the instrument. <\/p>

Modern gloss meters offer: measurement at 1 to 3 angles simultaneously; repeatability of 0.2 GU and accuracy of \u00b12 GU for professional models; fast measurement (1 to 2 seconds per reading); automatic calibration with integrated standards; statistics on measurement batches; configurable GO\/NOGO thresholds; USB\/Bluetooth data output; dedicated software for archiving and report generation; display of trends and historical statistics; mobile app integration. Motorized benchtop models perform automatic scans over large surfaces for complete characterization. <\/p>
Applications<\/h2>
Applications are widespread: the automotive industry (paint quality control, with clearcoat gloss typically 85 to 95 GU at 20\u00b0); the furniture and wood industry (paints for interior and exterior finishes); appliance manufacturing (enamels for visible surfaces); the industrial paint industry (quality control of new formulations); ceramics and tiles (glazes for tiles and sanitary ware); leather goods (glossy finishes); metal packaging (food cans, coating lacquers); the footwear industry; eyewear finishes; quality control of glass and mirrors.<\/p>
Reference standards<\/h2>
The main standards are: ISO 2813 (the international standard for gloss at 20\/60\/85\u00b0); ASTM D523 (the US equivalent); ASTM D2457 (for high gloss on plastic films, with a dedicated 75\u00b0 angle); DIN 67530 (Germany); JIS Z 8741 (Japan). Calibration is performed with ISO 17025 certified gloss standards, generally polished black glass plates at three values (low, medium and high gloss). The typical calibration interval is annual, with verification of the working calibrator against reference standards before each measurement campaign. <\/p>
Selection criteria<\/h2>
