It is a mature but continuously evolving technological field, in which traditional analog instruments coexist with high-resolution digital devices offering data acquisition functions. The precision and the repeatability of these measurements have a direct effect on the dimensional conformity of mechanical components and on the overall quality of the production process.

Would you like help choosing the right product ?

Measuring principles

Manual dimensional measurement is based on well-established metrological principles: direct comparison between the workpiece and a geometrical reference (rules, gauge blocks), reading on a graduated scale with a vernier, and the transformation of movement through precision mechanisms such as the micrometer screw or the rack-and-pinion system of dial indicators. In digital instruments, the most widespread transducers are capacitive and inductive ones, which convert displacement into an electrical signal processed with resolutions down to the micrometre. Typical sources of uncertainty include parallax errors, elastic deformation of the workpiece or of the instrument, thermal expansion and wear of the contacts.

Types of instrument covered

The main categories brought together in this section comprise vernier calipers in all their variants (vernier, digital, dial), external, internal and depth micrometers for high-precision measurements, mechanical and digital dial indicators for comparative and form measurements, lever-type indicators for difficult access, height and depth gauges, plug and ring gauges for go/no-go inspection, clamping and support systems (magnetic bases, columns, stands), instruments for measuring straightness, angles and inclination (electronic levels, clinometers, precision squares) and radius gauges for radii and curved profiles.

Traditional mechanical instruments

Vernier calipers, screw micrometers and dial indicators remain the benchmark for quick measurements, independent of any power supply and with high mechanical robustness. Their reliability over time makes them preferable in harsh environments and for on-site maintenance work.

Digital instruments and data integration

Modern digital instruments (calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges) incorporate liquid crystal displays, dynamic zeroing functions, mm/inch conversion, value memory and digital outputs (USB, RS-232, Bluetooth, dedicated wireless). This evolution preserves the usability of traditional portable instruments while adding reliability, automatic recording and a reduction in transcription errors.

Fields of application

Manual dimensional measurements are used across all manufacturing sectors: precision engineering workshops, mould and tooling construction, turning and milling operations, industrial maintenance, in-line and metrology-room quality control, and the automotive, aerospace, energy and packaging sectors. They are indispensable both in the prototyping stages and in series verification, and they form the basis for the dimensional traceability required by quality management systems.

Reference standards and regulations

The design, construction and calibration of instruments for manual dimensional measurement are governed by numerous international standards: ISO 13385-1 for vernier calipers, ISO 3611 and DIN 863 for external micrometers, ISO 463 for dial indicators, ISO 14253 for the declaration of conformity in metrology, as well as the system standards ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 for quality management. Periodic calibration with certified standards in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 ensures metrological traceability to the national and international chain (SIT/Accredia in Italy).

Selection criteria

Choosing the instrument best suited to a specific application calls for careful assessment of the measuring range, the resolution, the accuracy required, the ambient conditions, the degree of protection (IP54, IP65, IP67 for harsh environments) and the need for data integration. The child pages examine each of the various technological categories individually, with specific details on metrological performance, fields of use and technical selection criteria for every family of instruments.

Workshop and metrology laboratory instruments for the direct measurement of lengths, diameters, depths, heights and angles.

["post-19281","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 -
